Marsala, designed in 1971 by Michel Ducaroy (the creator of Togo), is making its return to the collection. A lesser-known yet emblematic piece, it is stepping back into the spotlight with a new interpretation featuring more sustainable materials, in line with today’s challenges and Ligne Roset’s commitment to responsible design.
Designed just two years before Togo, the Marsala armchair already bore all the hallmarks of Michel Ducaroy’s new approach to comfort, which he would go on to develop with Ligne Roset. He was a man of his time. By making well-being a central concern through the emergence of a democratic approach to design and industrial production, the 20th century gave rise to groundbreaking seating typologies and new ways of sitting that remain highly relevant today.
These innovations were made possible by technological advances and the development of new materials, such as foams, wadding, stretch and synthetic fabrics, and even thermoformed plastics. When he joined Ligne Roset’s design department in 1954, the designer made the most of these materials, contributing to the development of a modern culture of living in general, and seating in particular, through the creation of numerous models such as Kashima and, the icon among icons, Togo.
The Marsala seating range includes an armchair, two sofas and a footstool, as well as an armless fireside chair and an armless bench. Materials: shell in brown-stained beech plywood; seat and backrests in high-resilience polyurethane foam; quilted polyester wadding cover, removable by a professional.
Marsala itself is embodied in the shell-seat typology: an enveloping thermoformed plastic shell topped with a generous cushion, positioned closer to the ground and inviting a more relaxed way of using the furniture. It responds to evolving social needs and lifestyles, placing emotional, tactile and visual dimensions at the heart of its design. The comfort of these welcoming forms has not aged a day in more than fifty years… yet they continue to adapt to our times.
In its contemporary version, Marsala responds to environmental challenges. The same shape, the same expressive appeal, the same invitation to sink into a welcoming seat, now in an even more comfortable and sustainable version. The original Altuglas shell, raised on small legs that make the seat appear to float above the floor, has given way to a more sustainable shell in stained beech plywood. This is perhaps the true strength of the design: its modernity continues to resonate with today’s interiors.
