Andreas Kowalewski was born in Berlin in 1976. Since his childhood he has been interested in designing objects. He began drawing at a very early age, then moved on to sculpture, finally discovering a passion for design. After an apprenticeship in cabinetmaking he studied product design at the Carl-Severing-Berufskolleg before continuing his studies at the Folkwang Universität der Künste (Essen, Germany) with a Masters in industrial design. Both during and after his studies he gained experience working for several design agencies in Essen, Berlin and Munich. He also worked for the Whirlpool Design Centre (Varese, Italy), Audi Design (Ingolstadt, Germany) and more recently as artistic director for Philips Design (Amsterdam, Netherlands).
Since his approach is extremely intuitive, his creations largely result from his experiments with materials and manufacturing technologies, resulting from a process which integrates the expertise of various fields of industry. Drawings form an integral part of his creative process, giving birth to the initial expression of his ideas. His ambition is to create new possibilities through a critical form of design, reinterpreting and improving but never repeating. To him, his creations must provoke emotions whilst conveying quality.
His works, for which he has been awarded various design prizes, have been exhibited in Tokyo, New York, Berlin and Milan. His agency, based in Amsterdam, was founded in 2011 and specializes in industrial and furniture design.
